Sunset in Wrangell, Alaska

Wrangell, Alaska is noted for its wonderful evenings and sunsets. This photo was taken at 10:15 PM, circa 1930's. The original postcard is dated July, 1935 and was sold by the Bear Totem Store in Wrangell. Here are some great photographs of Totem Poles in Alaska.

You can read more of the history of Wrangell from their own town history site. To a get a great feeling of what it was like to sail through Wrangell bay in 1910, read The Alaskan, by James Oliver Curwood, a story of the fight to save and use Alaska's precious resources properly admidst the greed and political corruption at that time.

The Tinglit tribe lives in this area. There is a wonderful story of children playing sandlot ball in Alaska by Josh Miller, of the Tinglit Tribe, in the book Sandlot Stories.

Clans of the Tinglit tribe each have a beautiful and unique creation story that has survived contact with Europeans and Americans. Each clan has their own story that is private to the clan and explains their origins through stories of ancestors. The Alaska Native Knowledge Network (ANKN) shows the Tinglit tribal list of clans and maps of clan locations.

Northland Rapids

The original postcard was purchased in Canada and is circa 1910, showing beautiful rapids in "The Northlands".

Many of James Oliver Curwood's books refer to The Northland as being above a certain latitude in Canada, the Territory between Labrador and the Rocky Mountains. Many of his characters are crossing this wilderness on foot, snowshoe, or dog-sled.
