Autumn in the Rockies

The original Postcard, from 1910 shows the autumn colors of the Rocky Mountains along a highland road through the mountains.

The rose hues on the mountains and golden fall foliage are examples of the unique coloring that comes from the hand painting done on these antique lithographs. The image is somewhat faded in its current state, but see the link below the postcard to view the restored image in its full color and brilliance.

Pogosa Spring

The original post card is a hand colored lithograph from 1910 of The Great Pagosa Spring at Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Pagosa Spring is one of the worlds largest hot springs located on the outskirts of Pagosa Springs on the bank of the San Juan River. This picturesque town is at the western end of Wolf Creek Pass on Highway U.S. 160 in a region of beautiful hills and timber.

Eagle River Canon, Colorado

The original Postcard, from 1906 shows The Eagle River Canon in Colorado. The town of Gilman, Colorado and The Empire zinc mine are shown as seen from Battle Mountain Highway.

Gillman was founded in 1886 during the Colorado mining boom. The town is perched on the side of Battle Mountain and once had as many as 2000 residents during its boom years. Most of the cabins were built on the side of the steep hill with steps going up the cliff so that the miners could get to the mines.

Today it is a ghost town, but is closed to the public while mining contaminants are cleared from the area.

The next few pages contain images from a single packet of lithographs printed in 1914 showing the trip through the Royal Gorge in Colorado. They are quite beautiful and there are links to information so that you too can travel this same route today. Enjoy!
