The monument in the center is the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument. It is 284 ft. 6 in. tall. The design is neoclassical by a German architect, Bruno Schmitz and was completed in 1901.
There is an observation deck located at the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. Tourists and visitors may take the elevator or climb the 331 steps to the top, 330 of which are numbered. There is also a museum and gift store in the base of the monument.
Every Christmas since 1962, this monument has been decorated by the city of Indianapolis as “The World’s largest Christmas Tree.”
