Battle at Bunker Hill Postcard

Last Modified: June 10, 2018

The Battle of Bunker Hill (Breed’s Hill) took place on June 17, 1775. This is where the famous order of “Don’t fire ’till you see the whites of their eyes” was supposed to have been given. However, sources disagree on who actually gave this order, if anyone gave it at all. The two officers who may have ordered their troops to hold while the British approached were General Israel Putnam of Connecticut and Colonel William Prescott of Massachusetts.
