Smithsonian Institution Vintage Postcard

Last Modified: June 11, 2010

The Smithsonian Institution building is shown in this vintage card, and is located in the National Mall in Washington D.C. The Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 through the half million dollar bequest of James Smithson.

From small beginnings it has grown to be one of the mightiest of the world’s activity centers in gathering and disseminating beneficial knowledge. It has made American Science respected in all parts of the world. Some of the greatest (human) race-benefiting inventions of the age and the foundation of many sciences had their inception here.

For a visual tour of the history of the Smithsonian Institution ground and buildings, see Historic Pictures of the Smithsonian Institution which shows pictures like this vintage postcard.
